Monahans Sandhills State Park / / Garrett + Haylee

Haylee, Landon’s sister has always been such a great supporter of ours. She is always filled with so much encouragement and excitement over our photos and progress and I just love sharing all things business with her. So we were really excited to have a session with them at the Monahans Sandhills State Park.

Before we started, we were approached by a ranger asking for a permit.  TECHNICALLY, we didn’t need a permit, because we were gifting this session to them - so we weren’t getting paid. I immediately blurt out, “BUT! She’s my sister!” I mean, she might as well be, I’ve known her since I was 15 -- I even refer to her as such, but for the sake of the story, please note that she is in fact, NOT my sister, but my sister-in-law.

The ranger graciously excused my outburst and explained protocol to us - and then we started a wonderful conversation about random camera stuff. He even chose to give us the best location based on lighting and what we were looking for and we eventually made our way out there. The place he suggested was near some sand, and seemed to be a great spot. We were excited to get to work, but a wind storm decided to grace us with its presence, and fling sand in our eyes. Thanks Texas. Missed you too.

It was in our best interest to wait out parts of the wind storm, so we sought shelter in our car and had some really great conversations as we hadn’t seen each other in months. Finally we decided we should get some photos, and as we were getting ready to set out our ranger friend came back over to us.

“Forgive me if this is too personal, but how are you two sisters?” he asked, motioning to Haylee and me.

As these photos indicate, Haylee is tall, skinny, fit, practically a goddess. Whereas, I’m 100% the opposite, in every aspect, minus the goddess part. So we both start to explain that we are not actually sisters, but sister-inlaws. I point to Landon and say, “She’s actually his sister!”

As he’s sizing up Landon and looking back at Haylee, we realize he’s probably confused. Landon is adopted, so they also don’t look alike. He has olive skin, dark hair. Haylee explains he’s adopted, but we totally looked like we were trying to get out of a lie we never made.

Surely he was going to kick us out, right? He looked at us and said “I get it. I’ve got some weird family situations as well.”

God bless Texas.

We spent the rest of the night laughing at how dumb we must have looked trying to explain to him - but we walked away not only with some pretty sweet photos but of some pretty wonderful memories as well.
