River Engagement Session

Every year we get together with 3 other couples for a camping trip. It’s the same group of guys (well some of them at least) that helped us move into our very first (tiny and way too expensive) apartment here in Seattle. They didn’t even know us - but our relationship has grown so much since that first encounter that we call our group “The Commune.”

During one particular camping trip, we went for a walk and found an amazing river. Anna and I, the adventurers that we are, started to hop rock to rock trying to get as far as we could into the river. We had to grab each other for balance, and we nearly fell in one time -- or, a lot of times. Not only was this place gorgeous, but now we had amazing memories there. So, of course, at sunset, we brought Anna and Spencer back for a mini-session.

It’s always so fun and exciting to photograph your friends -- but it can also be intimidating. They know the real you, so where as we can pretend to be the “made it big photographer” with people we don’t know, these guys, our friends, will laugh at you and make fun of you for the stupid things you say.

Luckily, Spencer and Anna are naturally comfortable being affectionate, and they are SO easy going. It was so fun to say, “Hey, want to stand in freezing cold water and hug each other?” They responded with “damn, straight,” which resulted in some pretty beautiful and fun photos.

Also, today is your lucky day. If you made it to the end of the blog, I have a treat for you. The photo above was taken of The Commune two years ago, when we decided it was an amazing idea to all pile on this swan for a photo. (Her name is Swanita. Good name, right?) It took us 20 minutes to get everyone on Swanita, she enjoyed every second, I’m sure, and out of every photo I’ve ever seen, this is 100% my favorite photo ever taken. You’re welcome.
